Ex-President of Jamaat-e-Islami Sri Lanka Rasheed Hajjul Akbar released on bail


KOLUMBO, Jan 12 (SABAH): Former President of Sri Lanka Jamaat-e-Islami Ustaz Rasheed Hajjul Akbar was released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate on Wednesday. 

He had been arrested on 12th of March 2021 by the counter Terrorism and Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Police.

A fundamental rights violation petition was filled at the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka challenging his arrest and continued detention as illegal and violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens guaranteed by the Sri Lankan constitution.

When the FR petition was taken up by the Supreme court for review on the 17th of December 2021, the Attorney General Department agreed for his release on bail.  In this sequence he was released today on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
