New COAS needs to restore fractured relationship of trust between army, nation: Asad Umar

ISLAMABAD, Nov 29 (SABAH): Central Secretary General Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Asad Umar urged the New Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to restore the fractured relationship of trust between the army and the nation, which was badly hurt by the decisions taken during the last eight months.

In a statement on Tuesday, Asad Umar said that General Qamar Javed Bajwa left behind a legacy of political turmoil, a shattered economy and worst of all a fracturing of the relationship of trust between the army and citizens, with his decisions.

The PTI secretary general said that General Asim Munir’s first priority should be to restore the relationship of respect and love between the nation and the military leadership. He stated that neither this relationship could be one-sided nor could it be obtained through use of force and coercion.

Asad Umar said that the relations between the nation and the army were badly hurt by the decisions taken during the past eight months. However, he added that the nation still felt proud of the soldiers who defended the country.

Meanwhile Senior Vice President Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Dr. Shireen Mazari stressed the need that the State cannot continue with business as usual and civil-military relations need a total reset in sync with our Constitution.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dr. Shireen Mazari said that there is massive damage control that the new GHQ set up will have to undertake post departure of General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

“This does not begin by abductions, assassination plots and protection of suspects by preventing FIRs, custodial torture, blackmailing videos and seeing every critical tweet by an individual as an instigation to mutiny,” she added.

The PTI senior vice president urged that an immediate end to enforced disappearances were needed and information given to families of the Missing as to the fate of their loved ones. She raised question that how many have stuck to the oath that they take? She asked that has anyone held them accountable for violating their oath?

She further claimed that “Mir Jafars are a reality of our history! But those who ask questions can be abducted, tortured or worse simply for asking! Let’s hope it will truly be.”

Talking about Azam Swati case, Shireen Mazari said that 21 FIRs against Azam Swati have been lodged in Sindh and Balochistan, as the Supreme Court (SC) remained blind to this mockery of its own judgment.

“The petulance of those doing this is dangerous because this vendetta against Senator Swati can lead to his murder. No wonder with 1 man’s departure so many feel,” she added.
