Wearing hijab is a fundamental religious & democratic right of Muslim woman: IJU

ISTANBUL, Feb 11 (SABAH): International Jurists’ Union (IJU) has learnt with a shock that the state government of Karnataka, India is attempting to ban hiijab, which is part of Muslim faith. IJU has learnt from the international media that a group of BJP supported young boys attempted to stop a Muslim girl from entering her college while chanting a Hindu religious slogan.

General Secretary of IJU Necati Ceylan in a statement issued on Friday said that the IJU holds that wearing hijab is a fundamental religious and democratic right of Muslim woman guaranteed by the United Nations and other major international treatises signed by India.

Necati Ceylan said that India claiming to be a secular democratic country can not restrict religious freedom and cannot directly or indirectly encourage those who preaches/create obstacles to religious freedom.

Hence, IJU is asking indian government ensure full freedom for all citizens in particular muslims who are seen to be vulnerable, he said.

Necati Ceylan said that IJU also demands that any attempt to ban hijab should be scrapped immediately, should India remain to be committed principles and values of democracy and secularism.
