Unanimous resolution passed during Convention held on the occasion of Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pak, 1973


ISLAMABAD, April 10 (SABAH): Unanimous Resolution was passed during the Convention held on the occasion of Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 while pledging to work together to uphold the Constitution and its principles, and to ensure a brighter future for the people of Pakistan.

The resolution was tabled by Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf chaired the convention held at the National Assembly Hall. Former president and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zarsari, former prime minister Senator Makhdoom Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, former chief minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Governor Punjab Engineer Mian Muhammad Balighur Rehman, Governor Sindh Muhammad Kamran Khan Tessori, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkwa Haji Ghulam Ali, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Shah Awais Noorani and other dignitaries, former parliamentarians in a large number attended the convention.

The resolution reads as under:

This Convention, while commemorating the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan states that;

Whereas, the Constitution of Pakistan enshrines that sovereignty belongs to Almighty Allah alone, and the authority is to be exercised by the people of Pakistan through their chosen representatives within the limits prescribed by Him as sacrosanct;

Whereas, the Constitution of 1973 was adopted on April 10, 1973, by the National Assembly of Pakistan, representing the will and aspirations of the people of Pakistan;

Whereas, the Constitution of 1973 reflects the vision of the founding fathers of Pakistan, including Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal, and embodies the principles of democracy, equality, freedom, and justice;

Whereas, the Constitution of 1973 has been a unique expression of the diversity and unity of Pakistan, as it recognizes the rights and autonomy of the provinces, while ensuring the integrity and political unity of the federation.

Whereas, the Constitution of 1973 has been a source of inspiration and guidance for the Parliament, Judiciary and the Executive in upholding the principles of constitutionalism, rule of law and protection of human rights;

Whereas, the Constitution of 1973 has been amended over the years, incorporating the changing needs and aspirations of the people of Pakistan, and ensuring that the Constitution remains a living document;

Whereas, the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is an occasion to celebrate the resilience of the Constitution and to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of democracy, rule of law, and human rights;

This Conventionurgesthat the Parliament of Pakistan:

Commemorates the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 and pays tribute to the founding fathers of Pakistan who laid the foundations of the Constitution of 1973 and to all those who have contributed to its development and evolution over the years;

Recognises the Constitution of 1973 as the mainstay of Pakistan’s democracy, providing for the participation and representation of all sections of the society in the governance of the country;

Reaffirms its commitment to uphold the principles of democracy, rule of law, human rights, and social justice as enshrined in the Constitution.

Appreciate the role of the Judiciary, Executive and Parliament, in upholding and implementing the Constitution of 1973 and ensuring that the principles, values, and objectives enshrined in the Constitution are upheld.

Calls upon State organs to take all necessary measures to ensure that the Constitution of 1973 is fully implemented, and that the rights and interests of the people of Pakistan are protected and safeguarded.

Takes pride in the legacy and history of drafting and adopting the Constitution of 1973 that enshrines federalism, trichotomy of powers, independence of judiciary, provincial autonomy, and fundamental rights for the citizens;

Emphasizes the importance of upholding the principles of federalism, which is one of the fundamental tenets of our Constitution;

Pledges to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in letter and spirit;

Expresses its confidence in the resilience of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and its belief that it will continue to serve as a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration for generations to come;

Declares April 10, 2023, as the National Constitution Day, to be celebrated each year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of 1973 and to educate the people of Pakistan about the Constitution and its significance for the country.

Adopt this resolution unanimously, and pledge to work together to uphold the Constitution and its principles, and to ensure a brighter future for the people of Pakistan. The convention passed the resolution unanimously.
