Standing Committees of the NA reaffirm their commitment towards sustainable development goals

ISLAMABAD, June 13 (SABAH): SDGs Secretariat of the National Assembly of Pakistan held a Roundtable Meeting of Council of Chair (Chairpersons Standing Committees of National Assembly) in Committee Room 5, Parliament House, Islamabad.

The meeting was chaired by Romina Khurshid Alam, Convener National Parliamentary Taskforce on SDGs. The aim of the roundtable was to integrate the global agenda 2030 into the standing committees, where they deliberate on the incoming legislations, review expenditures and present reports in House.

SDGs are a global framework for moving towards sustainable development. Pakistan has developed polices for monitoring of SDGs but for the effective implementation we need to mainstream the global agenda in all tiers. This roundtable discussed the role of parliamentary interventions and use of legislative tools in scrutinizing the incoming legislations with an SDG lens.

Romina Khurshid Alam, in her presentation stated that, “SDGs is not a global agenda, but it is a national framework towards our country’s progress and prosperity.” The roundtable was attended by notable Parliamentarians, standing committee chairpersons and Members of Parliamentary SDGs Taskforce. Nadeem Ahmed from SDG Unit, Ministry of Planning, Reforms and Special Initiatives also participated in the said meeting and gave out a detailed presentation on Current ranking of SDG goals in Pakistan.

The presentation led to a fruitful discussion and chairpersons of standing committees reaffirmed their commitment towards sustainable development goals.
