SC bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial rejects FBR plea regarding additional wealth tax notices to Shehbaz, Kulsoom

ISLAMABAD, Dec 06 (SABAH): Supreme Court of Pakistan has rejected the appeals of Federal Board of Revenue pertaining to additional wealth tax issued to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif’s late wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif.

Three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah heard the petitions filed by Commissioner Inland Revenue, Lahore, etc against Shehbaz Sharif and late Kulsoom Nawaz.

Mian Yusuf Umar Advocate appeared before the court as a lawyer in the case.

The court declared that both Shehbaz and Kulsoom had submitted their wealth tax from 1994 to 1998 but the FBR sent notices of the additional wealth tax.

The Supreme Court observed that the demand notice must be issued before the issuance of the additional wealth tax notices and the FBR failed to establish in the court that it had issued the demand notice.

The Sharif family had challenged the FBR notices in the Lahore High Court which declared the board’s notices null and void. However, the FBR challenged the LHC verdict in the Supreme Court.
