President Alvi for greater cooperation with Sri Lanka in trade, economy & education
ISLAMABAD, Feb 09 (SABAH): President Dr. Arif Alvi has called for promoting greater cooperation between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the fields of trade, economy and education. He said that both brotherly countries enjoyed cordial relations that needed to be further expanded for the mutual benefit of the two countries. He underscored the need for increased cooperation in the areas of higher education, academia, and research to promote mutual understanding between the people of both countries.
President Dr. Arif Alvi expressed these views while talking to a delegation of Senior Civil Servants of Sri Lanka, which called on him, at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday. Currently, twenty Senior Civil Servants of Sri Lanka are attending a two-week training programme related to International Relations, Peace and Strategic Studies, Public Policy, Leadership and Management, at the National Defence University, Islamabad.
Speaking on the occasion, the President urged bureaucracy to be responsive to people’s needs, improve the system’s efficiency, and their capacity and intellect for ensuring fast-paced development. He said that developing countries should focus on the development of education and health sectors, besides making fast decisions to help address the challenges being faced by them.
The President said that bureaucrats and politicians must adapt emerging technologies and make timely decisions to build intellectual pathways for the development of the IT sector. He said that the intellectual edge made nations great, and countries should focus on developing knowledge economies and investing in the intellectual development of their people. He stated that developing countries could achieve accelerated economic growth by focusing on the development of the IT sector and adopting conducive business policies.
The President also highlighted the need to become more financially disciplined to overcome perennial financial issues of developing countries. He added that common people alone could not be burdened again and again to bear the brunt of bad economic decisions and the elites must also share the burden for the greater good of the country. He further stated that decision-makers and bureaucracy must change their attitude and mindset to help resolve people’s issues.
While responding to a question about regional cooperation, the President stressed the need for greater economic cooperation among the South Asian countries that would bring greater prosperity to the people of the region. He further stated that developing countries should stay away from the new global polarization and focus on issues like literacy, health, climate change, global warming, and improving regional cooperation.
The participants of the training appreciated the efforts of the Higher Education Commission and National Defence University for taking the initiative to provide training opportunities to Civil Servants of friendly countries.
The Senior Civil Servants from Sri Lanka are currently attending an Executive Training Program which aims to impart modern knowledge and techniques to Civil Servants to ensure good governance and efficient service delivery, besides promoting mutual understanding among civil services and academia of Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile President Dr. Arif Alvi has underscored the need for increasing parliamentary cooperation among the member countries of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to IPU’s mission to work for peace, democracy, human rights, youth empowerment and sustainable development through political dialogue and parliamentary action.
The President made these remarks while talking to the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Duarte Pacheco, who called on him, at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday.
Talking to Duarte Pacheco, the President said that parliamentarians could play a significant role in promoting international peace and conflict resolution. He emphasized that the world collectively needed to take steps to stop wars and bring peace to the world. He urged that parliamentarians of the world should work for global peace and prosperity. The President briefed the visiting dignitary about the contribution made by Pakistan in the war against terror. He said that Pakistan had lost thousands of people and security forces, besides suffering economic losses of over 100 billion dollars while fighting a long battle against terrorist elements. He highlighted that Pakistan had successfully defeated the terrorists and had achieved major successes in this regard.
President Dr. Arif Alvi stated that Pakistan had hosted millions of Afghan refugees for over four decades which spoke volumes of the humanitarian spirit of the country. He expressed the hope that the visit of Duarte Pacheco would help to further strengthen parliamentary relations between the Parliament of Pakistan and IPU’s member Parliaments. President IPU informed that IPU was an important platform, as it shared its experiences and knowledge with other member countries. He expressed his heartfelt condolences over the recent terrorist attack on a mosque in Peshawar and condemned the barbaric attack.
