President Alvi approves appointment of Ashtar Ausaf Ali as AGP


ISLAMABAD, May 09 (SABAH): President Dr. Arif Alvi has approved appointment of Ashtar Ausaf Ali as Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP).

According to a statement issued by President Dr. Arif Alvi on social media, the President accorded approval to the appointment on the advice of the Prime Minister under Article 100 (1) of the constitution.

The post of the attorney general of Pakistan had been lying vacant after resignation of Barrister Khalid Jawed Khan.

Meanwhile according to the notification issued by Government of Pakistan Ministry of Law and Justice dated 9th May, 2022, Islamabad.

In exercise of powers conferred under Article 100(I) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan 1973, the President is pleased to appoint Mr. Ashtar Ausaf Ali, Sitara-I-Imtiaz, as Attorney General for Pakistan with the rank and status of Federal Minister with immediate effect.

The copies of the notification have been sent to all the concerned officials.  

It is worth mentioning here that Ashtar Ausaf Ali had served as special assistant to the prime minister (SAPM) on law and justice during 2015-16. He had been the AGP during the tenure of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

He previously served as Advocate General of Punjab twice, from 1998 to 1999 and 2012 to 2013. He also served as Prosecutor General of the province from 2011 to 2012, and as Advisor on Human Rights to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1997.

As Attorney-General, he spearheaded the drafting of the 25th Amendment merging FATA with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, began the settlement process that culminated in the resolution of the $6 billion Reko Diq investment dispute, and the renewal of the GSP Plus trade package. He was, awarded Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2018.
