Parliament firmly believes in freedom of expression as fundamental constitutional right: NA Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf
ISLAMABAD, June 21 (SABAH): National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf reiterated the Parliament’s unwavering commitment to upholding freedom of expression as a fundamental constitutional right in a meeting with a delegation led by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) President Muhammad Afzal Butt on Wednesday at the Parliament House.
The meeting aimed to discuss the challenges faced by the media and journalist community, as well as to strengthen the collaboration between the two sides.
During the meeting, Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf commended the significant and positive role played by journalists in the society. He acknowledged their invaluable contribution to strengthen democracy and expressed his hope that PFUJ would continue to actively play its due role in resolving the problems faced by the media and journalist community.
Highlighting the importance of media independence and freedom of expression as fundamental constitutional rights, Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf assured the delegation that the Parliament firmly believes in upholding these principles. He further emphasized his commitment to creating an enabling professional environment for media personnel and journalists particularly in the Parliament and providing full cooperation in addressing their concerns.
President PFUJ Muhammad Afzal Butt expressed his gratitude to Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf for his supportive stance towards the media and journalists. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to overcome the challenges faced by journalists and reiterated PFUJ’s commitment to working closely with the National Assembly to find sustainable solutions.
