Munem Zaffar has demanded of those in the corridors of powers to purge Sindh police department of black sheep
KARACHI, MAY 20 (SABAH): Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi interim Ameer Munem Zaffar has demanded of those in the corridors of powers to purge the Sindh police department of black sheep in order to bring short-term kidnapping and other crimes to an end.
The JI leader here on Monday strongly lambasted the incident involving a police party and official mobile van for short term kidnapping of two Karachiite from Orangi Town areas and later their release after payment of heavy bribe.
At one hand, he said, the Sindh police have become a total failure in curbing crimes in the mega city, whereas on the other found involve in kidnapping for ransom.
He added that the Orangi Town tragedy was not an isolated incident as policemen were found involved in kidnapping for ransom and robbery in the past as well.
The situation itself was evident on the fact that crimes in the city couldn’t be controlled because policemen were hands in gloves with the hardcore criminal elements and they also enjoy political and governmental cover, he said.
Munem Zafar further said that hundreds of crimes occur in the megalopolis on daily basis as the criminals enjoy immunity in Karachi, whereas if the victims offer resistance, they are killed. He added that the Pakistan People Party has been ruling over the province for the past 16 years and the situation has been moving from bad to worse.
He quoted media reports as saying that 285 innocent Karachities have lost their lives during resistance against street criminals during the past three years, whereas 70 among them were killed in the outgoing year alone.
He said that the JI demands across the board police reforms, indiscriminate action against criminals within the file and ranks of police and recruitment of locals in order to ensure community policing.
