Medical experts of LGH appeal to citizens to exercise moderation & caution in eating meat on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha

LAHORE, July 06 (SABAH): Medical experts of Lahore General Hospital (LGH) have appealed to the citizens to exercise moderation and caution in eating meat on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha so that they do not have to go to hospitals due to illness. It is common to eat too much meat to cause stomach acidity, intestinal and other diseases.

These views were expressed by Associate Professor of Medicine Dr. Israr-ul-Haq Toor, Gynecologist Dr. Laila Shafiq and Dr. Muhammad Maqsood while discussing the people’s habits in eating meat during Eid days. People with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, uric acid, and joint pain should take special care because the use of red meat not only raises cholesterol and high blood pressure but also causes heart disease and diabetes. Meat should be used after it has been properly cooked so that it is easily digested. Avoiding hot chili spices will be beneficial for health.

Dr. Laila Shafiq said that red meat is very good for pregnant women and people who have Iron deficiency, red meat is essential for the production of red blood cells and provides vitamin B12 to the body.

Dr. Israr-ul-Haq Toor, Dr. Muhammad Maqsood and Dr. Laila Shafiq added that meat is available in large quantities to everyone on Eid-ul-Adha. Instead of overcooking, it should be cooked with vegetables and other items. Instead of cooking immediately, the sacrificial meat should be left in the open air for a few hours. One of the purposes of Eid-ul-Adha Qurbani is to deliver sacrificial meat to the poor and deserving people who cannot afford to buy meat all year. Medical experts of LGH said that freezing meat for a long time produces germs (harmful bacterias) which are not good for health. Instead of enjoying such meat, the chances of indigestion, gastroenteritis, heartburn and other diseases increase. Cold drinks with red meat are also not good for health. “Old meat damages the gums and carries the risk of cancer,” they said. Medical experts told citizens to take a 6-hour break from each meal and eat more fruits and vegetables to maintain balance. “Meat is a blessing, eat it, but with caution,” they said.
