Jamaat-e-Islami, PTI’s petitions against delays in LG polls:  SHC orders holding polls within four weeks in Karachi, Hyderabad

KARACHI, Nov 18 (SABAH): Sindh High Court (SHC) Friday ordered to hold local body elections in the province’s two major urban areas Karachi and Hyderabad within four weeks.

A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh had heard the petitions and  on Friday the SHC read the reserved verdict against petitions filed by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) over delays in the elections in the two cities of Sindh.

Directing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to release the election schedule, the court ordered the Sindh government to ensure security and other facilities for the polls. It may be noted that Karachi local government elections were put off for a third time on Sindh’s request in October after reviewing the Interior Ministry’s letter in which it had expressed its inability to provide security personnel for the local government elections.

The Sindh cabinet approved the postponement of local bodies’ elections in Karachi for 90 days and also informed the provincial office of the Election Commission of Pakistan about the decision through a letter.

The major opposition parties in Karachi, PTI and JI, took a strong exception to the delay in local government elections and said that the ruling PPP and MQM-P were afraid of holding polls.

The chief election commissioner (CEC) had said the election commission wants to hold local body polls in Karachi at the earliest and suggested deploying personnel from Punjab for administering the polls.

Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja had also said that the provincial government cannot amend laws to postpone local body elections and that the announcement of the date for local government elections is the responsibility of the ECP”.

“If Sindh police officials are deployed in Islamabad to provide security there,” the CEC had continued, “how about deploying Punjab police officials in Sindh? Rangers or other law enforcement agencies can be deployed for security; we can ask the Punjab government for security.”
