It is very unfortunate that govt has used thin numerical majority in Parliament as a ‘Lashkar: Senator Irfan Siddiqui
ISLAMABAD, Nov 21 (SABAH): “Numerical majority is of course important in a democratic parliamentary system of government, but it is very unfortunate to use this majority as an “Lashkar” in the parliament and to legislate by crushing and completely sidelining the opposition” These views were expressed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Irfan Siddiqui in a press interview.
“What I have seen in the last eight months is nothing to be proud of,” he said. We are at the bottom of the global graph in the areas of human rights, religious tolerance, women’s rights, media freedom, and law and justice. If we continue to legislate merely on the strength of numerical majority by making the parliament a battlefield, then our democratic system will also become a joke in front of the whole world.
Replying to a question, Senator Irfan Siddiqui said that the conduct of the government has made the standing committees of both the houses ineffective. If these bills were tabled in committees, they could have been improved through open discussion and consultation.
He said that bulldozing laws regarding Indian spy, electronic voting machines and NAB amendment shows that the government does not believe in parliamentary values.
Replying to another question, Senator Siddiqui said that on this undemocratic conduct of the government، the united opposition in both the houses would take effective steps after consultation۔
