IHC asks govt to work on some prisoners transfer agreement for getting transferred Dr. Aafia Siddiqui to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, July 05 (SABAH): Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday asked the government to work on some prisoners transfer agreement for getting transferred Dr. Aafia Siddiqui to Pakistan and present a report in this regard on the next hearing.

As per details, the lawyer of Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, Imran Shafique after the hearing told media outside the court premises that the honorable single bench comprising Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaque Khan heard the case and some very important developments surfaced during it.

He said for many years, the government of Pakistan had been requested to sign some bilateral or international agreement so that the prisoners who are sentenced abroad can serve their remaining prison term in their own country.

He said that this is an ordinary agreement and many years ago the government of Pakistan also worked on it but the then advisor to Prime Minister on Law Ashtar Ausaf Ali gave a negative advice that such an agreement would not be in favour of Pakistan so that the whole process was halted.

He said on Friday the Attorney General assured the honourable court that they have invited all the stakeholders to work on some agreement for transfer of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui to Pakistan and within two weeks they would find a viable solution in this regard. However, the court granted the government four-week time and directed to come with the proposed agreement in the next hearing otherwise be ready for the consequences. The court adjourned further hearing of the case till 26th August, 2024.
