Foreign diplomats marred by military lockdown in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Sep 25 (SABAH): As foreign diplomats are on a guided tour of occupied Jammu and Kashmir, thousands of Indian forces personnel have been deployed in Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Budgam districts, transforming the territory into a military exercise zone.

According to media reports, this heavy-handed approach is being witnessed despite the start of the second phase of the so-called assembly elections.

The Indian authorities have tightened restrictions, deploying advanced surveillance measures across the territory. Drones monitor sensitive areas, CCTV cameras watch strategic locations, and vehicle checkpoints scrutinize movement. Identity checks are conducted randomly, and mobile phone services and internet connectivity are tracked to identify potential dissent.

Locals describe the situation as “suffocating,” feeling like prisoners in their own land. The restrictions have caused immense inconvenience, limiting access to essential services like healthcare and education. Businesses suffer, with many shops and markets closed due to the heavy military presence.

This is not the first time such restrictions have been imposed in Kashmir. Similar measures have been taken previously, sparking concerns about the stifling of dissenting voices and the erosion of fundamental rights. The situation in Kashmir has been marked by human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, rape, torture, and enforced disappearances.
