Election Commission ceases existing boundaries of administrative units of Punjab ahead of LG polls in the province
ISLAMABAD, Jan 07 (SABAH): Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ceased existing boundaries of administrative units of Punjab ahead of local government polls in the province.
According to the notification, Election Commission of Pakistan under Article 222(b) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Section-221 of the Elections Act, 2017 read with Section-10 of the Punjab Local Government Ordinance, 2021, is charged with the duty to delimit the constituencies of the Local Government institutions.
The commission has issued schedule for carrying-out delimitation of Village and Neighborhood Councils, whereupon, proceedings will be started by the Delimitation Committees as per notified timelines.
ECP further said that delimitation of Village and Neighborhood Councils is required to be carried-out giving due regard to the existing boundaries of administrative units such as District, Tehsil, Qanungo Halqa, Patwar Circles, Revenue Estates, tiers and extent of urban and rural local areas etc. Accordingly, any change in the limits of these units, tiers and extent of urban and rural local areas, while proceedings of delimitation are under way shall hamper the smooth proceedings.
“Therefore the Election Commission of Pakistan is pleased to direct that boundaries of existing administrative units, Metropolitan Corporations and defunct Local Governments, existed prior to the promulgation of the Punjab Local Government Ordinance, 2021, shall stand ceased forthwith and no change in the boundaries of aforementioned administrative units shall be made till the culmination of delimitation process in the Punjab Province.”
