ECP introduced a comprehensive 17-point code of ethics for national media

ISLAMABAD, Dec 29 (SABAH): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has introduced a comprehensive 17-point code of ethics for the national media, emphasizing responsible journalism. The code mandates refraining from conducting exit polls, polling station surveys, or coverage that may unduly influence voters. Result announcements should explicitly declare that these are unofficial and incomplete results, urging the public not to consider them final until officially declared by the Election Commission.

As outlined in the code of ethics, the national media encompasses print, electronic, digital, and social media influencers. Throughout the election campaign, the media is expected to avoid portraying biased opinions against Pakistan’s ideologies, self-determination, security, judiciary, and the freedom and integrity of other national institutions. Dissemination of statements or allegations posing a threat to national unity, peace, and security is strictly prohibited. Any content involving personal attacks based on a candidate, political party, caste, religion, or fraternity will face legal action for violation.

Statements and allegations between candidates will be made and verified by both parties. Monitoring units, including PEMRA, PTI, PML-N, the Ministry of Information’s Cyber Digital Wing, and political parties, will oversee expenses and campaign activities.

The Election Commission will play a supportive role in implementing the code of ethics, ensuring media representatives and their residences’ security, and preventing campaigns funded by the national treasury.
