54% Pakistanis are unaware of Clause 18 in the Nikkahnama; 49% women opine similarly: Gallup & Gilani Pakistan Survey

ISLAMABAD, April 8 (SABAH): According to a survey conducted by Gallup & Gilani Pakistan, more than half of Pakistanis (54%) are unaware of Clause 18 in the Nikkahnama; 49% women opine similarly.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women from across the country was asked the question, “Are you aware of Clause 18 in the Nikkahnama, which allows the wife the right to initiate divorce (Talaq-e-Tafweez)?”. In response, 9% said ‘ very aware’, 14% said ‘somewhat aware’, 14% said ‘not very aware, 54% said ‘not aware at all’, while 9% didn’t know or didn’t respond.

Meanwhile, according to another survey conducted by Gallup & Gilani Pakistan, nearly half of Pakistanis (49%) are somewhat or not at all aware of the legal process and concept of Khula.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women from across the country was asked the question, “How aware are you of the concept and legal process of Khula in Pakistan?”. In response, 9% said ‘very aware’, 33% said ‘somewhat aware’, 12% said ‘not very aware, 37% said ‘not aware at all’, while 9% said they don’t know or gave no response.
