PML-N, PPP back away from their stance of proposing the establishment of constitutional courts

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17 (SABAH): A significant breakthrough has occurred regarding the 26th Constitutional Amendment, as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have backed away from their stance proposing the establishment of constitutional courts.

According to media report, a special parliamentary committee meeting reached an agreement among government coalition parties and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) on the formation of a constitutional bench.

As per media report, the government and JUI have decided to consult with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on a joint draft, which Maulana Fazlur Rehman will share with PTI leadership.

It may be recalled that on Monday, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman rejected the government’s draft of the constitutional amendment saying that it could potentially infringe on individual freedoms.

He said that his party had raised objections to the government’s draft amendments “that would undermine both judicial and public rights.”

However, after discussion with the PPP leadership, many provisions have been withdrawn.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that they rejected the government’s draft of the constitutional amendment, which could potentially infringe on individual freedoms.
