Existing political system doesn’t have capacity to resolve country’s problems: Shahid Khaqan

ISLAMABAD, Jan 25 (SABAH): Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the central leader of Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said the existing political system doesn’t have capacity to resolve the country’s problems and deliver to the masses.

In an interview with Voice of America, Abbasi said the Parliament alongside provincial assemblies were inactive, claiming the scope of listening to dissent opinions by the political parties had come to an end that is why the Parliament failed to resolve the country’s problems in the last five years.

He further said that in the prevailing political and economic scenario, the country cannot be left at the mercy of caretaker government for a period of three months and continued that Pakistan cannot afford early general elections as well.

Abbasi said that in order to get the country out of the dire situation, all the institutions need to sit together to resolve the country’s issues.

On a query in connection with acceptance of PTI members’ resignations, the PML-N senior leader remarked, “Presenting resignations on one day and announcing to come back to assemblies on the other day was not possible.”

The senior PMLN leader said that the government wants to discuss national issues with the former prime minister and Chairman PTI Imran Khan, but this discussion could be done only within the Parliament.

He furthered if the PTI would have been part of the Parliament it could play role in building the caretaker government as well as holding elections but its members preferred to resign though the upcoming general elections will be held without generating any controversy.

He called upon the judiciary to rectify the decisions taken while putting aside Constitution and law in the PML-N supremo’s Nawaz Sharif case.

The former prime minister said that the army should work with the government to abolish the legislation regarding the extension of the army chief’s term otherwise it will have negative effects on the institution.
