COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa reiterates his pledge to leave after the completion of his second three-year term in two months
WASHINGTON, Oct 05 (SABAH): Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa assured the nation that the armed forces have distanced themselves from politics and want to remain so.
General Qamar Javed Bajwa also reiterated his pledge to leave after the completion of his second three-year term in two months, saying that he would do as he promised earlier.
According to media reports, General Qamar Javed Bajwa made these remarks at a lunch at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington.
Meanwhile according to the state-run TV, General Qamar Javed Bajwa has hinted at quitting his position after completion of his second three years tenure as COAS. Army chief said that the armed forces have no role in politics of country and will act according to the promise. He said that reviving the economy of the country should be the priority of all segments of society, adding that without strong economy the nation could not achieve its targets.
According to the people who attended, General Qamar Javed Bajwa addressed the gathering before the lunch and then also made informal remarks while talking to his guests. He reminded the nation that reviving the country’s ailing economy should be the first priority of all segments of society, adding that without a strong economy the nation would not be able to achieve its targets.
“There could be no diplomacy either without a strong economy,” said the army chief in his address to an audience which included a large number of Pakistani diplomats.
Meanwhile Pakistan and United States have agreed on improving bilateral cooperation in economic, trade and investment sectors.
The understanding was reached during meetings of Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa with Secretary of Defence General Lloyd James Austin III Retired, National Security Advisor Jacob Jeremiah Sullivan and Deputy Secretary of state Wendy Ruth Sherman during his visit to USA.
During the meetings, matters of mutual of interest, regional security situation and bilateral cooperation in various fields were discussed.
The army chief thanked the US officials for their support and reiterated that assistance from our global partners shall be vital for rescue and rehabilitation of the flood victims in Pakistan.
He offered heartfelt condolence on the deaths and devastation caused by hurricane in Florida.
He said Pakistan fully understands the loss and pain of victims’ families as Pakistan is suffering from similar effects of climate change.
Both sides had convergence on major international issues including Afghanistan and need for cooperation to avoid humanitarian crisis and improving peace and stability in the region.
