ECP defers LB polls in Karachi Division due to heavy rains


ISLAMABAD, August 24 (SABAH): The local bodies elections in Karachi Division has been postponed once again while keeping in view the current situation of rain emergency. The polling for the LG elections was scheduled to take place on August 28 (Sunday) in second phase of the local bodies elections in Sindh. The Election Commission of Pakistan will announce new date for holding elections in Karachi and Hyderabad Divisions later on.

According to a private TV channel, the local bodies polls were deferred in Karachi Division due to heavy rains. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) through Secretary ECP had sought an urgent report from six key institutions regarding preparation for local body elections in Karachi.

Under the supervision of Chief Election Commissioner Dr. Sikandar Sultan Raja, an important meeting was held at the Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday regarding the holding of local bodies elections in Karachi Division, during which the weather situation and the issues of local elections were reviewed.

The second phase of LG elections was initially supposed to be held on July 24 were deferred till August 28, last month on the requests of MQM-Pakistan, GDA, chief secretary Sindh, and provincial election commissioner.

It is noteworthy here that the other day the ECP also postponed the local bodies polls in Hyderabad Division due to heavy rains and floods.
